Boomahnoomoonah

BOOMAHNOOMOONAH, Victoria

The name of this rural town, Victoria's longest single-word place name, is thought to mean "big water", "big red kangaroo" or "big winds" in a local language. Located between Wangaratta and Yarrawonga, there's not much left of the place now - the school, post office and church have all closed.

Boner Dams

BONER DAMS, Kurnalpi, Western Australia

This dam is in the abandoned town of Kurnalpi in the Western Australian desert. When gold was no longer being found in around 1910, people started leaving and now there is little evidence of the town left.
Some gold mines in the area have interesting names like Sucess, Brilliant, Dazzle, Sparkle, Scottish Lass and Billy Billy. Nearby there is also Bullock Holes Timber Reserve.

Rum Jungle

RUM JUNGLE, Northern Territory

Rum Jungle is an old uranium mining region around 100km south of Darwin. According to Wikipedia, "the area derives its name from an incident when a thief stole 750 ounces of gold from miners after getting them drunk with rum". Another story is that the local pub ran out of all drinks except rum and everyone in town had to drink rum.
After the Rum Jungle uranium mine was closed in 1971, attempts have been made to clean up the site and the radiation. The mine is now known as one of Australia's most radioactive and polluted areas.

Mount Horrible

MOUNT HORRIBLE, Palmers Oaky, New South Wales

This small mountain seems to have been named by Thomas Archer, according to this obituary in the Australian Town and Country Journal (20 Dec 1905):
From Jimbour he set off, accompanied by Mr. Arthur Chauvelle and a black boy, to find a way to Fitzroy Downs, and after a fortnight's scrambling through scrubs and over mountains, one of which he named Mount Horrible, they emerged upon Fitzroy Downs, and saw Mount Abundance in the distance, and then returned half-starved to Darling Downs, having for a week existed on black ducks and tea.

Black ducks and tea?

Cooties Well

COOTIES WELL, Western Australia

If you drink from this well, will you catch cooties, the imaginary childhood disease?

The actual origin of this bore's name is unknown, on an unnamed road in the middle of the outback, about 30km away from the nearest village, Mount Magnet. Mount Magnet is the longest surviving gold mining settlement in Western Australia, and was so-named by the surveyor Robert Austin when he noticed that all the iron in the area interfered with his compass readings.

As you can you see above, there are some other ripper place names nearby like Poison Paddock Mill, Knobbies Bore, Big Head Mine and Coolaloo Bore.

Nothing much to see here.
