Roughit

ROUGHIT, New South Wales

If you want to stay here overnight, I'm afraid you'll have to rough it. Deep in the Hunter Valley near Singleton, Roughit has no hotels, or anything really except a few farms and houses. There was once a school here but it closed back in 1980.
Roughit seems to be the name of a property which used to be located here. It was owned by the Scott family who the adjacent Scotts Flat was also named after.

Ding A Ding Lake

DING A DING LAKE, Victoria

This curiously named spot is near Little Desert National Park and the towns of Nurcoung and Gymbowen in far western Victoria. Oddly, there is no lake to be seen at the Google Maps location.

Burning Mountain

BURNING MOUNTAIN, New South Wales

This hill in Wingen, near Scone in New South Wales is known as Burning Mountain because it actually is burning! Under the sandstone, a smouldering coal seam has been burning for over 6,000 years. Originally thought to be volcanic, it is the world's oldest known coal fire. You can follow a trail to the site and see smoke coming from the ground and the damage it has caused to the landscape. The name Wingen means "fire" in the Wonnarua language.

Lake Fanny

LAKE FANNY, Walls of Jerusalem, Tasmania

If you look at a map of Tasmania, you'll find Lake Fanny. Dive in and get wet.
Probably boringly named after a lass named Fanny, this lake is located in the remote Walls of Jerusalem National Park in central Tasmania. Walls of Jerusalem was so-named because the geographic features supposedly resemble the walls in Jerusalem. You can find various biblical placenames in the area like Herods Gate, Lake Salome, Jewels of Solomon, Zion Hill, Damascus Gate, King Davids Peak and the Pool of Bethesda.

Mary Smokes Creek

MARY SMOKES CREEK, Queensland

Between Kilcoy and Beerwah in Queensland is this peculiar creek with a name that sounds like a statement. Apparently, an indigenous Australian named Mary who worked at a farm in the area would sneak off to smoke her pipe by the creek.
The Australian writer Patrick Holland wrote a book called The Mary Smokes Boys about a fictional town named after this creek.

Question Mark

QUESTION MARK, Lincoln Gap, South Australia

Question Mark is the name of a hill, not far from Port Augusta in South Australia. Is it shaped like a question mark, or should we question a fellow named Mark? Well, the origin of the name is hard to determine and a name like this is near impossible to google. Strangely, the Wikipedia page is only in Swedish.
About 10 kilometeres away is the Baxter Immigration Detention Centre which closed in 2007 after much controversy.

Nearby sites of note are Goat Hill, Horse Well, Bald Hill, Old Man Hill and Nutt Nob.
