Because of the dry and infertile bush around here, the original Barren Box Swamp was developed and divided into two sections - 40% is used for water storage and recycling while the rest is a natural wetland which is only full of water after heavy rain or flooding from Mirrool Creek. The area has been classified as an Important Bird Area and is not yet open to the public.
Bizarrely, there is a children's book called Bizi the Musk Duck of Barren Box Swamp based on the success of the develpopment project to save the swamp.
