NAR NAR GOON, Victoria

Nar Nar Goon is a town just out of Packenham, east of Melbourne. The name comes from a lost local word which is thought to mean native bear (koala) or water rat, depending who you ask. Nar Nar Goon is a particularly funny name for Australians because "goon" is a colloquial word meaning cheap wine in a carton and "nar" means "no". So the usual joke goes something like this:
"You bringing stubbies to the party?" (Are you bringing small bottles of beer to the party?)
"Nar Nar Goon" (Oh no. I shall bring a box of cheap wine.)
In fact, Nar Nar Goon is a nice little town famous for the murals painted on its historic buildings and is near the Gumbaya World amusement park.
